Here at Falkenridge Farm, we have a commitment to producing high-quality food in a manner that is good for the environment, the animals themselves, and of course us! On the farm you’ll find extensive gardens and orchards, as well as an assortment of animals, which can include (depending on the time of year) horses, sheep, pigs, turkeys, ducks, and many types of chickens (for meat, eggs, and fun).
All animals raised on Falkenridge Farm receive a non-GMO feed, and their diets are subsidized with fresh greens from the farm. As soon as they’re big enough, the animals are free-ranging out on pasture, accessing the greens on their own, and when they’re too little for that, fresh greens from the garden get delivered to them daily. This year, due to customer demand, one batch of broiler chickens will be receiving certified organic feed,as well.
All fruits and vegetables produced on Falkenridge Farm are grown in a sustainable way without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides. There’s no shortage of natural fertilizers around here (see animal list above), and the chickens take care of most of the bugs. Diversified crops and crop rotation also help keep the pests at bay. We use certified organic seed wherever possible (about 95%). This year, we’ll be adding numerous fruit trees to the orchard, as well as another large garden expanse for perennial and annual vegetables.
Falkenridge Farm is not certified organic, although we follow the principles and practices of the organic tenets. At this point, we do not wish to have the cost of organic certification filter down to the customer. We pride ourselves on transparency in our farming practices, and encourage anyone wanting reassurance on our methods to visit the farm to see our farming practices personally. Appointments for tours are appreciated (and somewhat necessary) in peak season, but drive-bys are welcome anytime. Detailed, educational tours (about one hour) are available for a nominal fee.
Wanting to provide our animals with feed that was, at the very least, 100% non-GMO, and in some cases, organic, took us on an extensive quest. In our search, we found a source of non-GMO and organic animal feeds of the highest quality, but alas, there was no northern distributor. Hence, we made arrangements to become the Muskoka area distributor for Jones Feed Mills, producer of poultry, swine, sheep, and horse feed of exceptional quality. Initially, we will operate primarily by pre-order, but we’ll try to keep a few extra bags of the most popular items on hand all the time, just in case.
